The AHA Transformer runs on three power sources: 220V shore power at a campsite, 12V from your bakkie's electrical system while driving or parked, and an optional off-grid battery system for extended stays without a running engine or a power point. You start with what you need and add to it if your camping evolves.
220V Shore Power at a Powered Campsite
When you are at a campsite with electricity, the Transformer connects via a standard blue caravan plug, a straight passthrough. Every 220V socket in the unit works. Your fridge switches to mains. You charge devices, run the kettle, cook on the induction plate. No inverter needed at a powered site. It is a direct connection to the campsite supply.
12V from Your Bakkie's Electrical System
As standard, the Transformer draws 12V power directly from the bakkie's battery via the alternator. The water pump, interior and exterior lighting, 12V sockets, and fridge all run from this connection while you are driving. A Victron Battery Protector monitors the vehicle battery and cuts the connection before it can go flat, so you are never stranded with a dead bakkie. As long as the engine is running, the alternator keeps everything topped up. On a long drive, this system handles everything without a single additional component.
Off-Grid Battery System for When You Are Stationary Without Power
The base system is enough for most camping combinations: powered sites, day drives, weekends away. Where it reaches its limit is extended stationary time without shore power and without the engine running. If you are spending days at a remote location with no electrical hookup and no reason to run the bakkie, an auxiliary battery keeps everything going independently of the vehicle.
Battery options available at the factory:
- 105Ah deep-cycle battery: reliable for shorter off-grid stays. Two batteries recommended for extended use.
- 108Ah lithium: lighter and faster-charging than deep-cycle, suitable for moderate off-grid use.
- 154Ah lithium: a mid-range option for longer stays.
- 200Ah lithium: the largest option, suited to extended off-grid travel.
An Orion Smart 12/12 DC/DC isolator charger keeps the auxiliary battery charged from the alternator while driving, so arriving at camp with a full auxiliary battery is automatic. A 380W solar panel with a 30A MPPT controller can be added to maintain charge while stationary. A 600W pure sine wave inverter is available if you need to run 220V appliances from the battery when shore power is not available.
Which Setup Do You Actually Need?
Most AHA owners find the base system covers the majority of their trips. The off-grid kit makes sense for extended travel through areas with no shore power: Angola, deep Botswana, remote Namibia, or rustic camps with no electrical hookup.
